A LITTLE ABOUT NIGHTWISH

Nightwish is a Finnish metal band performing songs primarily in English. It was founded by Tuomas Holopainen in 1996 in the city of Kitee. The early work of Nightwish was distinguished by a combination of the female opera vocals of the former vocalist Tarja Turunen, a keyboard and symphonic arrangement and a heavy guitar base of power metal. This style is most often defined as power metal and symphonic metal.

I still remember how I once bought the first Nightwish album, Angels Fall First, on a cassette. It was a rainy October day, but as soon as I finished listening to the recording, two rainbows appeared in the sky. I had never before seen a rainbow in the fall, especially two at once. You can rest assured that I liked the music 🙂 It was like a trip to some fairy-tale world filled with unusually beautiful sounds … Many years have passed, and I still remember that bright day. The music of Nightwish managed to undergo many changes over the years, but still does not leave me indifferent.

The idea of creating the group came to keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen in the summer around the fire.
The first album began to be recorded when none of the Nightwish members were even 20.
American Indian musician John Two-Hawks, with whom Nightwish recorded the song Creek Mary’s Blood and repeatedly performed together on stage, Tuomas found through Google.
The tour in support of the latest album of Dark Passion Play (the most expensive album in the history of Finland) lasted two years and covered the whole world – from Israel to Hong Kong, from Oslo to Sydney and Quebec.
Rehearsals for the new album took place in a kind of summer camp in the Finnish backwoods, and the recording of the album itself has already begun and will include the London Philharmonic Orchestra and choir.
The second Nightwish album was greatly influenced by the sound of the band Stratovarius. The tilt towards high-speed power metal with symphonic arrangements was felt not only in music, but also in texts filled with fantasy images and religious themes.
Unfortunately, the collective had no bass player for the new record. More precisely, he was taken away to repay his homeland. Band leader Tuomas Holoppainen had to look for another bass player. His school friend and bandmate Nattvindens Gråt Sami Vyansk was the only bass player in Kitej who agreed to join the group.
The recording took place at Caverock Studios in his native Kitee from August to October 1998.
The violin for the album was recorded by school music teacher Plamen Dimov, who taught at Tarja, Tuomas, Yucca and Emppu. One violin was really not enough, and the group invited three more symphony musicians to record viola, cello and a second violin. Due to the huge number of re-recordings made, this string trio received the nickname “Trio of the Dumbheads” from the group.
Extreme vocals lit up on the Nightwish album thanks to Finntroll vocalist Tapio Vilska. He performed the parts in the songs Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean and The Pharaoh Sails To Orion.
The recording was difficult due to the passions between the members of the team. Tuomas and Emppu quarreled over the distribution of finances in the group and the authorship of music.
Moondance has screams in the background. The guys after the next drinking party decided to enrich their song in this way and spoiled for fame.
The catchy ballad Walking in the Air is a cover version of the 1982 soundtrack for the British cartoon Snowman.
The lyrics of the composition Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean have been criticized for their satanic focus. The album cover also received several unflattering reviews due to the fact that the figure of a girl lying in the water supposedly resembled an inverted cross.
The video for the song Sacrament of Wilderness was shot on an amateur camera during a concert at a local club on November 13, 1998.
On Finnish soil, the record was released on the Spinefarm label. The European distributor is Drakkar. Toy’s Factory distributed the album in Japan, and Century Media sold the album in North America. By 2001, the album became platinum and gained worldwide fame.
In the winter of 1999, the band went on their tour in Finland, and in the fall, Nightwish went on a tour of Europe and gave 25 concerts with the opening act of the band Rage. After the Finns’ performance, up to half of the audience left the hall. The headliner was content with half-empty rooms.
According to eyewitnesses, in Moscow, the newly released Oceanborn album was impossible to get – the first edition was sold out instantly. The song Sacrament of Wilderness sounded literally everywhere.
Quotes

Tuomas Holoppainen about the promises of his songs:

The song Gethsemane was written by me for a certain girl, but it just sounds cool when Tarja sings it, not me. All my lyrics are very personal, and inspiration comes from my own experiences, dreams, fantasies. I love fantasy. Tolkien is my God!
