Viktor Robertovich Tsoi (June 21, 1962, Leningrad – August 15, 1990, near the village of Kesterciems, Latvian SSR) – Soviet rock musician, songwriter and artist. The founder and leader of the rock band “Cinema”, in which he sang, played the guitar, wrote music and poetry. He starred in several films.

Born June 21, 1962 in Leningrad.
Father – Robert Maksimovich Tsoi – engineer. Mother – Valentina Vasilievna Guseva – physical education teacher. Later Victor replaced three educational institutions, moving with his mother from school to school.
Parents gave Victor the first guitar when he was in fifth grade.
Choi organized the first musical group, studying in the 8th grade, wrote the first song at the age of 18.
Choi became interested in martial arts under the influence of Bruce Lee, karate was preferred. Prior to Lee, the images created by Mikhail Boyarsky and Vladimir Vysotsky played an important role in shaping Victor’s character and hobbies.
Victor’s favorite color was black, with flowers – yellow roses.
Victor did not like winter, could not stand the sight of blood.
Choi lasted a year at the Art School named after Serov and was expelled for poor performance. Parents at that moment supported their son, advising them to do what the soul lies to. Victor heeded their words and as a result never received higher education.
A professional manufacturer of Japanese netsuke figurines made of wood, Viktor Tsoi first appeared on the television screen (in the Monitor program) precisely as a talented woodcarver.
After receiving his specialty, he worked in the restoration workshop of the Catherine Palace in Pushkin.
Initially, in the first year of its existence, the Kino group was called Garin and Hyperboloids in honor of the famous novel by Alexei Tolstoy. It was under this sign that the team was accepted to the Leningrad Rock Club.
The producer of the debut album “Cinema” was Boris Grebenshchikov.
The very first apartment of Tsoi in Kiev took place, by an unfortunate coincidence, not far from the prosecutor’s office. The policeman quickly came to his place, and Victor, having nearly got the article for illegal labor, was sent to Moscow.
In 1983, Choi was examined in a psychiatric clinic for mental health, which was dictated by his reluctance to join the army.
When the popularity of “Cinema” began to grow rapidly, Victor, in order to avoid accusations of parasitism, got a job, not much interfering with creativity. First, he washed the bath rooms on Veteranov Avenue, then worked in the Kamchatka boiler house, which became famous thanks to his person.
Four overseas concerts of “Cinema” were held in France (twice), Denmark and Italy.
Victor was fluent in English.
The wife of Tsoi Mariana was a make-up artist and dresser for the cinema group. Her and Victor’s only child, son Alexander, was born in 1985. The couple divorced in 1987, but officially the marriage was never dissolved.
Viktor Tsoi starred in the feature films “End of Vacation”, “Assa” and “Needle”. According to the results of the annual survey of the magazine “Soviet Screen” for playing the role of Moreau in the film “The Needle,” Viktor Tsoi was recognized as the best actor in 1989.
At the end of each concert, Victor, exhausted, fell to the floor and came to his senses for about ten minutes – he was so laid out at performances.
Friends, acquaintances and relatives of Tsoi noted that Victor, extremely energetic on stage, in everyday life was extremely shy in communication, especially with women.
At the last, as it turned out, Kino concert in Moscow on June 24, 1990 at the Luzhniki BSA, the Olympic flame was lit in the bowl of the stadium for the first time since the 1980 Summer Olympics.
Viktor Tsoi died on August 15, 1990 on the 35 km of the Sloka-Talsi highway.
