Definition of Rock Music (part 2)

AT THE SOURCES OF ROCK
Rock is not just a musical direction, it is a youth culture, a means of youth communication, a mirror of society. You don’t need to be too observant to notice that it is young people who pay much more attention, time and money to music than adults.

Young – the main visitors to concerts, participants in discos, buyers of audio and CD. It is to them that pop stars and popular groups appeal. Although lovers of youth music are sometimes not only active, but also aggressive. Obviously, the main need, uniting sympathy for the genres of youth music, is the need for entertainment.

It turned out that Rock, which appeared in the West in the 50s, became the exact opposite of this mainstream popular music. Rock music has become meaningful, valuable, worthy of study. Nothing is said directly, only hints that tease the imagination. It was originally created as a way of self-expression of youth, rebellion and protest, denial and revision of the moral and material values of the world. Nevertheless, the industry of mass culture and its ideology tried from the very beginning to direct the activities of rock groups into their commercial channel. But people like the Beatles strove for the unknown, deeper. They were young, incredibly rich, experienced almost everything that sensual imagination can invent. But there were also moments when they found themselves in a spiritual vacuum …

In general, for most of its existence, rock has been fragmented, emerging from a corkscrew of new styles and variations every few years. And this is quite logical, given that this genre itself was born from a mixture of different styles. The roots of rock can be found in ancient times: in folk music, and in jazz, and in blues. As a generalized term for a wide range of styles, specialists use the term “rock and roll”. However, in the common sense, this term is associated with a very definite sound. Therefore, it is more correct to use the term “rock” to avoid confusion.

Throughout its history, rock has shown the unsolvable eternal dilemma of fathers and children. As a means of self-expression of the young generation, rock in the eyes of the older generation looks only like children’s entertainment, sometimes dangerous and destructive.

The roots of rock can be found in ancient times: in folk music, and in jazz, and in blues, but truly rock has become what we understand now, only in the 50s.

The Beatles made a huge contribution to the development of youth music, of course, they gave the spiritual basis for rock, prepared an audience for it, but they could not found rock in terms of music. The Beatles music featured hard rock elements. Literally: hard or hard rock. The concept is so comprehensive that many do not see the difference between rock music itself and this, one of its most widespread and popular branches.

Sharpness in rock music has always been lacking – the first rock’n’rolls just for that reason irritated listeners who were used to a streamlined, smooth transfer of musical ideas.

Rock and roll was the first musical form proposed to the teenager and tailored specifically for him: before that there were adult records, children’s records, but there was nothing that would express purely teenage hopes and dreams, a purely teenage attitude to reality.

At the beginning of that decade, black and white music were separated just like the white and black communities. But time passed, and the radio, on which – also on different waves – transmitted this music, allowed Black to listen to white music and vice versa. Radio waves brought a completely new style, and the disinterested pioneers of this style began to gradually cross these two cultures. In the laboratories of life, new, wild, contagious music was born called rock and roll.
